The New Haven Community Mental Health Center is designed as a holistic environment focused on treating individuals with schizophrenia. It incorporates the concepts of porosity and figure-ground to foster an inviting and supportive atmosphere, creating a sense of openness and connectivity. By providing diffuse communal spaces and thoughtfully landscaped areas, the center addresses cognitive and social needs, offering moments of pause and meditation. Outdoor pathways meander through the facility, guiding visitors to various areas dedicated to treatment, education, contemplation, productivity, and growth, encouraging engagement and promoting a therapeutic journey toward wellness.
Each core of the center functions as an interconnected fragment of a larger system, symbolizing steps toward reintegration into the community. The design enhances the connection between community members and mental health providers by reimagining the traditional city block as a porous urban condition that emphasizes horizontality. This approach aims to destigmatize schizophrenia and eliminate barriers to seeking treatment, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that benefits both patients and the broader community.
